Key Mechanics: Surviving the Highlord’s Return

In this challenge, it’s not just about your DPS; it’s about maximizing your survivability while managing the mechanics. Here are the key points to keep in mind:

• Aura of Decay (Phase 1): You will gain stacks of Aura of Decay every time you stand near Inquisitor Variss. These stacks will reduce your max health. Step out at 5–8 stacks to let them reset and avoid dying to the debuff. The more stacks you can take without dying, the faster you’ll finish Phase 1.

• Nether Horrors: These adds spawn during Phase 1 and start channeling on Prophet Velen. You must interrupt them and AoE them down as soon as possible. If left unchecked, they’ll overwhelm you and Velen.

• Tormenting Eyes: These eyes channel a knockback beam. Face them directly to prevent knockback or kill them quickly with instant casts to avoid being pushed off the platform.

• Smoldering Infernals: These infamously line-drive knockback mechanics will push you away from your target. Always stay moving and never stand still in front of them. Your positioning is key here!

Once you’ve dealt with Variss and his adds, it’s time for Highlord Kruul, the real challenge.

Phase Breakdown: Managing Kruul’s Fury

After Variss dies, Highlord Kruul jumps into the fray, and things get seriously brutal. Phase 2 is all about managing your mitigation and interrupting Kruul’s abilities. Here’s what you need to do:

Annihilate (Kruul)

• Annihilate is a heavy physical hit that increases in damage the more stacks you take.

  • 1st & 2nd stacks: Use small defensives (e.g., Barkskin or Shield of the Righteous).

  • 3rd stack: Use a major defensive (e.g., Survival Instincts or Ardent Defender).

  • 4th+ stack: If you’re still alive by then, use immunity or maximum mitigation. Guardian Druids, use Barkskin + Survival Instincts to survive the onslaught.

Nether Stomp

• Kruul jumps on you, leaving a green puddle that applies a slow and deals damage. Move out of the puddle immediately or risk getting overwhelmed.

Twisted Reflection

• Interrupt this ability immediately. If Kruul finishes casting it, he will heal for millions. Your interrupt is your best friend here do not let this cast finish!

Nether Beams

• Purple beams will shoot across the platform. Jump over them or reposition to avoid being pushed off the edge. These beams are dangerous and can easily knock you off, ending your run.

3. The Velen Factor: Holy Orbs to the Rescue

During the fight, Prophet Velen will spawn Holy Orbs that can help you immensely. Here’s how to use them:

• Touching the orb will heal you to full and disorient all enemies (including Kruul). This is crucial for survival.

• Use the Holy Orbs to interrupt Kruul’s Annihilate or to save yourself when the Nether Horrors overwhelm Velen.

Don’t waste these orbs they can be the difference between life and death. Timing is everything with these powerful tools.

Class-Specific Tips: Tanking with Power

• Guardian Druid: Use Moonfire to kill the Tormenting Eyes. In Phase 2, use Incarnation to deal burst damage and finish off Kruul quickly. Your Fel Werebear form is the reward here use your tanking abilities to their full potential.

• Protection Paladin: Use Avenger’s Shield to silence Variss and the Nether Horrors. Final Stand (Talent) is an absolute life-saver for Phase 2 when things get rough.

• Vengeance DH: Fel Rush and Gliding make positioning much easier for this fight. Use your mobility to avoid Nether Beams and make sure you can keep Kruul under control during his ramp-up.
