Greetings, Denizens of the Azeroth Galaxy!

Warlords of Draenor follows Garrosh Hellscream into an alternate version of Draenor, where he prevents the orcs from drinking Mannoroth's blood and helps Grommash build the technologically armed Iron Horde. Azeroth's heroes break the Iron Horde's invasion, defeat its warlords, survive Gul'dan's fel takeover, and send Gul'dan into the main timeline, where he begins the crisis that leads directly into Legion.

Yes, the plot begins with time travel, an alternate world, a rebuilt Dark Portal, and several Hellscreams making terrible family decisions. Even Emperor Noob Sidious respects that level of unnecessarily complicated conquest.

🌀The Innkeeper’s Note (TL;DR)

Warlords of Draenor is not a rewrite of Warcraft's original history. Garrosh enters an alternate Draenor and changes its future, while the main timeline, including Outland, continues to exist. The Iron Horde begins as an orc army free from demonic blood, but Gul'dan eventually corrupts its surviving forces and turns the war into a Burning Legion invasion.

  • A New Draenor: Players visit an alternate version of the orc homeworld before it was shattered into Outland.

  • The Iron Horde Rises: Garrosh gives Grommash knowledge and technology from the future, helping several orc clans unite into a mechanized army.

  • The Blood Is Rejected: Grommash refuses Mannoroth's blood at first, so the orcs avoid the original Horde's immediate enslavement to the Burning Legion.

  • The Warlords Fall: Kargath, Ner'zhul, Blackhand, Kilrogg, and other leaders are defeated across Draenor's zones, dungeons, and raids.

  • Garrosh Meets His End: Thrall kills Garrosh during a Mak'gora in Nagrand, closing the conflict that began in Mists of Pandaria.

  • Gul'dan Takes Control: After the Iron Horde begins to collapse, Gul'dan returns with fel power and forces its remnants into the Legion's service.

  • Legion Begins Here: Archimonde sends the alternate Gul'dan to Azeroth, creating the direct bridge into the next expansion.

What the World Looked Like Before Warlords of Draenor

The Siege of Orgrimmar ended with Garrosh Hellscream removed as Warchief. Instead of executing him, the leaders of Azeroth took him to Pandaria to stand trial for his crimes. Vol'jin became Warchief of the Horde, the Alliance withdrew from Orgrimmar, and both factions expected a chance to recover after years of war.

Garrosh never waited for the verdict.

With help from Kairozdormu, a rogue bronze dragon, Garrosh escaped and traveled to an alternate version of Draenor approximately 35 years in its past. This was not the same past that created present-day Outland. Kairoz had opened a path to another possible Draenor, one that could develop along a different course without erasing the history Azeroth already knew.

Kairoz wanted access to more worlds and more armies. Garrosh wanted one army under his control. Their partnership ended quickly when Garrosh killed Kairoz, found his father Grommash, and began reshaping this Draenor himself.

The Warlords of Draenor Story in Chronological Order

1. Garrosh Changes Draenor's Future

Garrosh knew the event that had doomed the orcs in the original timeline. Gul'dan would offer the clan chieftains the blood of Mannoroth, binding them to demonic power and the Burning Legion. He warned Grommash before the gathering and prepared the orcs to fight.

When Gul'dan presented the blood, Grommash refused it. Mannoroth attacked, but the assembled orcs killed the pit lord with weapons built from technology Garrosh had brought from the future.

The orcs had escaped one form of slavery. They had not chosen peace.

Grommash united several clans as the Iron Horde. Its core leadership included Blackhand of the Blackrock clan, Kargath Bladefist of the Shattered Hand, Kilrogg Deadeye of the Bleeding Hollow, Ner'zhul of the Shadowmoon, and Garrosh's Warsong allies. Using foundries, siege engines, iron stars, ships, and a modified Dark Portal, the Iron Horde prepared to conquer Draenor and invade modern Azeroth.

2. The Iron Horde Invades Azeroth

The Dark Portal in the Blasted Lands turned red as the Iron Horde attacked. Khadgar led an expedition through the portal with major Horde and Alliance champions, including Thrall, Maraad, and Lady Liadrin.

On the Draenor side, the expedition discovered that Gul'dan, Cho'gall, and Teron'gor were being used to power the portal. The heroes freed them, not as an act of trust, but to cut the gateway's energy. They then destroyed the portal and escaped through Tanaan Jungle while the Iron Horde pursued them.

Destroying the portal stopped the immediate invasion, but it also stranded Azeroth's forces on Draenor. Their answer was to establish fortified garrisons and build alliances with the people already resisting the Iron Horde.

3. The Horde and Alliance Build Their Footholds

The Horde traveled to Frostfire Ridge, where it joined Durotan, Draka, Ga'nar, and the Frostwolf clan. Together they resisted the Thunderlord clan, the Bladespire ogres, and Iron Horde pressure. The campaign established Frostwall as the Horde garrison and placed Durotan at the center of the resistance.

The Alliance landed in Shadowmoon Valley and worked with the draenei. Ner'zhul's Shadowmoon clan had been pushed into the Iron Horde and turned toward Void magic. Prophet Velen sacrificed his life to purify the darkened naaru K'ara, while Yrel grew from a rescued captive into a defender of her people. The Alliance established Lunarfall as its garrison and helped protect Karabor from the Shadowmoon assault.

These two opening campaigns tell different local stories, but both serve the same purpose. Azeroth gains a permanent foothold, finds native allies, and begins dismantling the Iron Horde clan by clan.

4. The War Spreads Across Draenor

In Gorgrond, the Iron Horde's industrial machine collides with a much older conflict between the plantlike Primals and the stony Breakers. The campaign attacks Iron Horde operations and points the heroes toward Blackrock Foundry, the center of Blackhand's weapons production.

Talador brings the war to the draenei heartland. The Iron Horde attacks Shattrath while the Sargerei, draenei who have joined the Burning Legion, threaten Auchindoun. Maraad dies protecting Yrel during the defense of Shattrath. His death becomes a turning point for Yrel, who steps forward as one of the draenei's leading champions.

In the Spires of Arak, the story shifts to the arakkoa. The winged Adherents use the power of the sun against the cursed Outcasts, while High Sage Viryx rules from Skyreach. Players help the Outcasts challenge that order and uncover more of Draenor's ancient Apexis civilization.

Each zone widens the story beyond “famous orcs from the past.” Draenor is a living world with draenei cities, ogre empires, arakkoa faiths, ancient titan relics, and primal forces that never survived in the same form on Outland.

5. Thrall and Garrosh Fight Their Final Mak'gora

Nagrand is the heartland of the Warsong clan and the final leveling front against Garrosh. The campaign breaks the Warsong's hold and brings Thrall face to face with the former Warchief.

Garrosh challenges Thrall to Mak'gora. During the fight, Garrosh blames Thrall for placing him in a position he was never prepared to carry. Thrall rejects that accusation and kills Garrosh with the elements.

Garrosh's death ends his personal story, but not the war he created. The Iron Horde still controls powerful strongholds, and Gul'dan remains free. The emperor's verdict is simple: removing one angry orc does not cancel the invasion subscription.

6. Highmaul and Blackrock Foundry Fall

The first raid campaign targets Highmaul, the capital of the Gorian ogre empire. Imperator Mar'gok has allied with the Iron Horde and commands immense arcane power. His defeat removes a major Iron Horde partner. On Mythic difficulty, Cho'gall appears after Mar'gok and reveals the growing threat of his Void-corrupted Pale forces.

The assault then moves to Blackrock Foundry. This enormous industrial complex produces the Iron Horde's weapons, armor, siege engines, and warships. Players destroy its production lines and kill Warlord Blackhand, breaking the military engine behind Grommash's campaign.

By this stage, the Iron Horde is losing its leaders, allies, and weapons. Gul'dan sees his opening.

7. Gul'dan Corrupts the Iron Horde

Gul'dan confronts Grommash and offers demonic blood again. Grommash refuses, but the weakened Iron Horde can no longer silence the warlock. Kilrogg drinks the blood, Gul'dan seizes control, and Grommash becomes his prisoner.

The remaining Iron Horde is transformed into a fel army. Tanaan Jungle, once the staging ground for the original invasion, becomes the center of Gul'dan's plan to bring the Burning Legion into Draenor.

Khadgar and the factions return to Tanaan by sea, establish new bases, and assault Hellfire Citadel. Inside, they fight corrupted warlords, defeat Kilrogg, destroy a resurrected Mannoroth, and free Grommash. The story has come full circle: the demon whose blood Grom rejected at the beginning is raised to enslave the orcs at the end.

8. Archimonde Falls and Gul'dan Reaches Azeroth

The final battle takes place at the Black Gate, where Archimonde enters the conflict. Azeroth's champions, Yrel, Khadgar, and Grommash fight together against the demon lord.

Archimonde is defeated, but the victory carries a hidden cost. Before his defeat is complete, he sends Gul'dan through a portal to Azeroth. The surviving defenders celebrate Draenor's freedom while Gul'dan arrives in the main timeline with a new purpose from the Burning Legion.

That final act turns Warlords of Draenor from a side journey into the opening chapter of Legion.

Is Cho'gall the final boss of Highmaul?

Imperator Mar'gok is the listed final boss of Highmaul and the final encounter on Raid Finder, Normal, and Heroic difficulties. Mythic groups fight Cho'gall in an additional phase after Mar'gok, which works as a story epilogue rather than a separate fourth raid tier.

Features That Changed World of Warcraft

Garrisons Put the Commander at the Center

Garrisons were the expansion's signature system. Each player built a faction base, selected structures for fixed plots, recruited followers, sent those followers on missions, gathered resources, and unlocked profession or collection benefits.

The system made the player feel like a military commander instead of another wandering recruit. It also concentrated a large share of the expansion's daily routine inside a personal instance. Garrisons are sometimes described as early player housing, but they offered limited decoration and social freedom compared with a true housing system.

Followers and Missions Became a Long-Term Template

The follower mission table turned recruited NPCs into a progression roster with levels, traits, counters, and equipment. Later expansions reworked the idea through Order Hall champions, war campaigns, and covenant adventures.

Raiding Adopted the Modern Difficulty Structure

Warlords established 20-player Mythic as the fixed highest raid difficulty. Normal and Heroic used flexible group sizes, while Raid Finder remained the automated entry tier. This structure became the foundation for modern WoW raiding.

Character Models Received a Major Update

Many original playable races received rebuilt models with higher-detail faces, improved animations, and more expressive movement. The goal was to modernize the game's presentation while preserving the identity of existing characters.

Draenor Rewarded Exploration

Bonus objectives, rare enemies, hidden treasures, and zone-specific garrison outposts gave leveling a more open structure. Many rewards were placed directly in the world, encouraging players to leave the main road and search ruins, caves, cliffs, and suspicious piles of bones. On Draenor, the bones were often suspicious for excellent reasons.

Group Finder, Ashran, and Later Patch Systems Expanded Endgame Play

The Premade Group Finder made it easier to create cross-realm groups for raids, world bosses, quests, and other activities. Ashran offered large-scale faction PvP. Patch 6.2 added Mythic dungeons, Timewalking events, the garrison Shipyard, and Tanaan Jungle as an endgame zone. Patch 6.2.2 unlocked flying for players who completed the Draenor Pathfinder achievement.

How Warlords of Draenor Ended

The expansion ends with Archimonde defeated, Gul'dan expelled from alternate Draenor, and the immediate Legion invasion stopped. Grommash stands beside Yrel and declares that Draenor is free while the surviving defenders celebrate.

The ending is intentionally triumphant, but it moves quickly past Grommash's responsibility for founding the Iron Horde. He is not presented as innocent. He changes sides only after Gul'dan overthrows and imprisons him, then fights the enemy threatening everyone left on Draenor.

Gul'dan is the unresolved danger. He reaches Azeroth alive, carrying the Legion's plans into the main timeline. The heroes saved Draenor, but they also helped deliver one of Warcraft's most dangerous warlocks to their own world. A flawless victory, if your definition of flawless was written by a warlock.

How Warlords of Draenor Connects to Later WoW

The strongest connection is Legion. On Azeroth, Gul'dan opens the way for the Burning Legion's invasion through the Tomb of Sargeras. The attack leads to the disaster at the Broken Shore, the deaths of major faction leaders, the return of Illidan Stormrage, and the war against the Legion across the Broken Isles and Argus.

Khadgar's role in WoD also prepares him to lead the defense of Azeroth during Legion. His hunt for Gul'dan, his alliance with the factions, and his return to center stage all begin on Draenor.

Alternate Draenor returns during Battle for Azeroth when the Horde recruits the Mag'har orcs. Years have passed there. Yrel now leads the Lightbound, whose campaign has placed them in conflict with Grommash and the remaining Mag'har. That later chapter changes how players view WoD's hopeful farewell without erasing the victory at Hellfire Citadel.
