Greetings, Denizens of the Azeroth Galaxy!

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm begins when Deathwing erupts from Deepholm, shatters Azeroth, and unleashes the Twilight's Hammer and elemental armies in an attempt to bring forth the Hour of Twilight.

The story ends after the heroes recover the Dragon Soul from the past, help Thrall destroy Deathwing at the Maelstrom, and witness the Dragon Aspects spend their ancient power to begin the Age of Mortals.

Cataclysm was released on December 7, 2010. It raised the level cap from 80 to 85, rebuilt much of Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms, and turned Azeroth itself into the expansion's central battlefield.

Deathwing did not merely arrive as the next raid boss waiting behind a large door. He changed coastlines, split the Barrens, flooded Thousand Needles, damaged Stormwind, and made every cartographer in Azeroth quietly reconsider their career.

🌀The Innkeeper’s Note (TL;DR)

Cataclysm is the story of a wounded world fighting back. Deathwing is the central villain, but much of the campaign is fought against the Twilight's Hammer, hostile elementals, corrupted dragons, and regional enemies taking advantage of the disaster.

  • Deathwing broke the world: His eruption from Deepholm caused the Shattering and permanently changed the original continents.

  • The Hour of Twilight was the true goal: Deathwing and the Twilight's Hammer sought an apocalyptic future in which Azeroth fell beneath the Old Gods' power.

  • Every new zone defended part of Azeroth: Hyjal, Vashj'ir, Deepholm, Uldum, and the Twilight Highlands each showed a different front of the same worldwide crisis.

  • Ragnaros died in his own realm: The heroes invaded the Firelands and defeated the Firelord permanently.

  • The past supplied the final weapon: The heroes traveled to the War of the Ancients and recovered the Dragon Soul before it was lost.

  • Thrall fired the decisive attacks: Empowered by the Dragon Aspects, he used the Dragon Soul against Deathwing at Wyrmrest Temple and the Maelstrom.

  • Mortals inherited the burden: The Aspects sacrificed their titan-given power, declaring their ancient purpose fulfilled.

What Azeroth Looked Like Before Cataclysm

The Lich King had fallen, but peace never received an invitation.

Alliance and Horde forces returned from Northrend to a world under growing pressure. The elements were restless. Earthquakes struck. Doomsday cultists appeared in the cities. Resources were scarce, old rivalries were sharpening, and both factions were entering a more aggressive political era.

Thrall stepped away from his position as Horde warchief to help the Earthen Ring calm the elements. Garrosh Hellscream became warchief in his place, pushing the Horde toward a harsher military identity. King Varian Wrynn led an Alliance still carrying years of distrust toward the Horde.

Far below the surface, Deathwing waited in Deepholm, the domain of earth within the Elemental Plane.

Before he became Deathwing, he was Neltharion the Earth-Warder, the black Dragon Aspect empowered to protect the deep places of Azeroth. During the War of the Ancients, the Old Gods' whispers preyed on him. He betrayed the other dragonflights through the artifact first known as the Dragon Soul and later called the Demon Soul.

His corruption happened thousands of years before Cataclysm. The expansion marks his catastrophic return, not the beginning of his fall.

The Cataclysm Story in Chronological Order

1. Deathwing erupts from Deepholm

Deathwing bursts through the boundary between Deepholm and Azeroth. His passage tears across the planet and causes the Shattering, a global disaster that reshapes familiar zones across Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms.

Stormwind is damaged. The Barrens split apart. Thousand Needles floods. Darkshore's coastline is torn open. Auberdine is destroyed. Volcanoes, tidal waves, fires, and ruptured land turn the old leveling world into a record of Deathwing's violence.

The disaster also weakens the barriers between Azeroth and the Elemental Planes. That gives hostile elemental forces more room to invade, while the Twilight's Hammer treats the destruction as the beginning of a sacred apocalypse.

Deathwing's armor matters here. His corrupted body has become so unstable that enormous elementium plates are bolted onto him to keep his molten form together. The metal is not decorative armor. It is the cage holding a breaking dragon in one piece.

2. Goblins join the Horde and worgen join the Alliance

The Shattering changes the factions as well as the landscape.

On Kezan, Mount Kajaro erupts and forces the goblins of the Bilgewater Cartel to flee. Trade Prince Gallywix tries to preserve his control through greed, coercion, and the sort of management policy that makes a fel reaver look reasonable. After a chain of disasters and encounters with Thrall, the Bilgewater goblins join the Horde.

In Gilneas, the isolated human kingdom faces three crises at once: the worgen curse, civil unrest, and a Forsaken invasion. Night elf aid helps the afflicted Gilneans regain control of their minds, though the curse remains. King Genn Greymane and his people rejoin the Alliance as playable worgen.

These opening stories are not side notes. They show two peoples losing their homes and seeking survival through the Horde and Alliance.

3. The defense of Mount Hyjal

At Mount Hyjal, Ragnaros and his elemental armies attempt to burn Nordrassil, the World Tree. The Twilight's Hammer supports the invasion, while the Cenarion Circle, night elves, Ancients, and champions of both factions organize the defense.

Heroes help restore powerful Ancients and push the invaders back. The campaign prevents Hyjal's immediate destruction, but Ragnaros retreats to the Firelands. He has been repelled, not permanently killed.

That distinction becomes crucial later. Elemental Lords can return after defeat outside their native planes. To end Ragnaros for good, Azeroth's defenders must eventually enter his realm.

4. The war beneath Vashj'ir

Vashj'ir moves the campaign beneath the sea, where Alliance and Horde expeditions become trapped in a conflict involving the naga, the kvaldir, and Neptulon the Tidehunter.

Lady Naz'jar's naga forces attack Neptulon's domain, the Throne of the Tides. The heroes fight their way through the underwater region and assist Neptulon, but the story closes on an unresolved danger when Ozumat carries the weakened Tidehunter away.

Vashj'ir shows that the Cataclysm is larger than Deathwing's flight path. Old enemies are using the elemental upheaval to pursue their own goals.

5. Repairing the World Pillar in Deepholm

Deathwing's escape damages the World Pillar, the structure that helps stabilize the boundary between Deepholm and Azeroth. If it collapses, the wound between the two realms could deepen the disaster.

The Earthen Ring sends heroes into Deepholm to recover the scattered fragments of the pillar. They negotiate with Therazane the Stonemother, confront the Twilight's Hammer, and expose the cult's infiltration of the Earthen Ring.

The World Pillar is restored at the Temple of Earth. Azeroth is not healed, but one immediate path toward total collapse is closed.

6. Uldum, the tol'vir, and Al'Akir

Uldum contains titan facilities powerful enough to reshape, or destroy, life on Azeroth. The zone's conflict centers on the tol'vir civil war, the Neferset alliance with Deathwing, and the threat posed by Al'Akir, Elemental Lord of Air.

The Neferset accept a cure for the Curse of Flesh in exchange for serving Deathwing's cause. Other tol'vir factions resist. Adventurers also uncover the Halls of Origination, a titan complex containing a reorigination system capable of purging life on a vast scale.

The campaign reaches into Skywall, where heroes defeat Al'Akir in the Throne of the Four Winds. One of Deathwing's strongest elemental allies is removed from the war.

7. War in the Twilight Highlands

The Twilight Highlands become the main military front against the Twilight's Hammer.

The Alliance works with the Wildhammer dwarves, while the Horde fights to control the Dragonmaw clan. Both factions clash with Cho'gall's cult, twilight dragons, and Deathwing's forces across a region filled with dragon history.

Alexstrasza confronts Deathwing in the skies. She wounds him, but the battle leaves her injured and emotionally shaken. The encounter proves Deathwing can be hurt, yet it also shows that the remaining Aspects cannot end the crisis through raw strength alone.

8. The first raid campaign

The launch raids attack three pillars of Deathwing's war.

In Blackwing Descent, heroes invade Nefarian's laboratory beneath Blackrock Mountain. Nefarian, Deathwing's son, continues cruel experiments involving dragons, elementium, and reanimated creatures. The raid ends with Nefarian and the reanimated Onyxia defeated.

In the Bastion of Twilight, heroes strike at Cho'gall and the heart of the Twilight's Hammer. Cho'gall falls, while heroic raiders discover Sinestra, Deathwing's consort and a central figure in the creation of the twilight dragonflight.

In the Throne of the Four Winds, Al'Akir is defeated inside Skywall.

Baradin Hold operates beside this main story as a raid tied to control of Tol Barad. Its imprisoned bosses change with the raid tiers: Argaloth, Occu'thar, and later Alizabal.

9. The Zandalari warning and troll campaigns

Patch 4.1, Rise of the Zandalari, brings Zul'Aman and Zul'Gurub back as five-player dungeons. The Zandalari try to unite threatened troll empires into a new power.

Vol'jin rejects their plan and warns both factions. Heroes then stop Daakara in Zul'Aman and Jin'do the Godbreaker in Zul'Gurub.

This chapter is not the center of Deathwing's campaign, but it matters for the larger Warcraft story. It develops Vol'jin's opposition to reckless leadership and foreshadows the Zandalari's growing importance.

10. Ragnaros and the Firelands

The war at Hyjal resumes when Azeroth's defenders establish a foothold inside the Firelands. The Avengers of Hyjal push through Ragnaros's domain while the Molten Front campaign builds the invasion outside the raid.

Fandral Staghelm, once a respected night elf archdruid, has become the Firelord's majordomo. After Fandral falls, the heroes confront Ragnaros at the heart of his own elemental realm.

Ragnaros is permanently defeated because the battle occurs in the Firelands, his native plane. Azeroth has not sent him home again. His story as an active Elemental Lord ends there.

The distinction also gives the raid its narrative weight. Molten Core was a victory. Firelands was an execution.

11. End Time and the recovery of the Dragon Soul

With Ragnaros defeated, the war turns toward Deathwing himself.

The Dragon Aspects need the Dragon Soul, the ancient artifact Neltharion created during the War of the Ancients. The weapon once carried the combined power of the dragonflights, but it was lost to history.

The final dungeon sequence begins in End Time, a possible future where Deathwing has won and lies dead upon Wyrmrest Temple after the world has been ruined. Murozond, the corrupted future form of Nozdormu, blocks access to the timeways.

After defeating Murozond, the heroes travel roughly ten thousand years into the past through the Well of Eternity dungeon. They recover the Dragon Soul during the War of the Ancients and bring it forward to the present.

In the Hour of Twilight dungeon, the heroes escort Thrall and the artifact to Wyrmrest Temple while the Twilight's Hammer launches its assault.

Time travel in Azeroth is rarely a clean errand. Even Emperor Noob Sidious knows that when a quest begins with “enter the Caverns of Time,” someone is returning with an artifact and at least three new continuity questions.

12. Dragon Soul and Deathwing's final defeat

The Dragon Soul raid opens at Wyrmrest Temple in the present. Deathwing's forces attack the temple while the Aspects prepare the recovered weapon.

Thrall channels the Dragon Soul against Deathwing, but the first empowered strike does not kill him. It wounds the Destroyer and sends him fleeing toward the Maelstrom.

The heroes pursue aboard the gunship The Skyfire and parachute onto Deathwing's back. During the Spine of Deathwing encounter, they tear away the elementium armor plates holding his unstable body together.

Thrall fires the Dragon Soul again. Deathwing crashes into the Maelstrom, but his corruption erupts into a vast, malformed creature. In Madness of Deathwing, the heroes fight beside the Aspects to destroy what remains before he can complete the Hour of Twilight.

The final attack ends Deathwing's life and breaks the immediate apocalyptic plan.

Features That Changed World of Warcraft

Cataclysm changed more than the current raid tier. It rebuilt the game's foundations.

The old world redesign

Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms received their largest redesign. Hundreds of quest chains changed, zones gained clearer story arcs, and the 1 to 60 experience became more directed.

The cost was historical permanence. Many original quests and landscapes disappeared from the live game. Cataclysm made Azeroth feel current, but it also made players understand that an online world could lose parts of its past.

Goblins and worgen

Goblins gave the Horde a fast-talking, explosive, industrial culture. Worgen brought Gilneas, gothic horror, and another druid-capable race to the Alliance.

Both races arrived through long starting stories closely tied to the Shattering.

Flying in Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms

Players could finally fly across the original continents. This changed travel, quest design, exploration, and the physical scale of the old world.

Archaeology

Archaeology became a secondary profession centered on surveying dig sites and reconstructing artifacts from Azeroth's civilizations. Its rewards included lore objects, toys, pets, mounts, and rare equipment.

Guild advancement

Guild leveling, perks, achievements, and reputation gave guild membership a broader progression system. Some details changed in later expansions, but Cataclysm helped turn the guild itself into a progression track.

Reforging

Reforging allowed players to convert part of one secondary statistic on an item into another. It offered control over gearing, though it also encouraged players to solve caps through external calculations. Blizzard later removed the system.

Transmogrification

Original Cataclysm introduced transmogrification in Patch 4.3. Players could change the appearance of equipped gear while keeping its combat statistics, turning old raids and dungeons into enduring cosmetic content.

Modern transmog rules and collections are far more flexible, but the wardrobe chase began here.

Raid Finder

Dragon Soul introduced Raid Finder in the original Patch 4.3, giving matchmade groups access to a lower-difficulty version of the current raid.

This was one of Cataclysm's most influential and debated additions. Raid stories became accessible to far more players, while arguments over difficulty, social organization, and the meaning of raiding gained enough fuel to keep the tavern occupied for years.

Dungeon and raid design changes

Cataclysm's launch Heroic dungeons demanded stronger crowd control, interrupts, positioning, and mana management than many players expected after late Wrath of the Lich King. The expansion also moved 10-player and 25-player raids toward shared rewards and difficulty expectations.

The result was an era remembered for ambitious encounter design and a sharp adjustment in group difficulty.

How Cataclysm Ended

Deathwing's defeat at the Maelstrom prevents the Hour of Twilight, but victory carries a price.

The Dragon Aspects pour their ancient power into the Dragon Soul so Thrall can destroy Deathwing. After the battle, they become mortal in the sense that they no longer possess their former Aspect immortality and titan-granted powers.

Alexstrasza declares that the Aspects have fulfilled their great purpose. The responsibility for Azeroth now belongs to its mortal races, beginning what she calls the dawning of the Age of Mortals.

It is a hopeful ending with an uncomfortable question attached. The Horde and Alliance have helped save the world together, yet their conflict has not been resolved. With Deathwing gone, those political wounds move back to the center of the story.

How Cataclysm Connects to Later WoW

Cataclysm leaves fingerprints across nearly every expansion that follows.

Garrosh and the road to Mists of Pandaria

Garrosh's wartime leadership, Horde expansion, and worsening conflict with the Alliance carry directly into Mists of Pandaria. Cataclysm does not finish his arc. It loads the siege engine.

The Dragon Aspects and Dragonflight

The Aspects' loss of power becomes a foundational problem for Dragonflight. Their purpose, legacy, titan connection, and relationship with mortal heroes return to the center of the story.

Wrathion and the black dragonflight

Cataclysm introduces the effort to create a black dragon free from the corruption affecting Deathwing's flight. That story produces Wrathion, who becomes a major figure in Mists of Pandaria, Battle for Azeroth, and Dragonflight.

N'Zoth and Battle for Azeroth

Cataclysm does not include a direct battle with N'Zoth. The expansion instead reveals the reach of Old God corruption through Deathwing, the Twilight's Hammer, and the nightmare vision of the Hour of Twilight.

N'Zoth moves into the open much later, especially during Battle for Azeroth. Looking back, Cataclysm becomes a major chapter in that longer Old God story.

Neptulon's unresolved fate

The ending of the Vashj'ir campaign leaves Neptulon's fate uncertain. Later content revisits him and confirms that the Tidehunter's story did not end with Ozumat carrying him away.

The reshaped world remains

The most visible connection is still under your character's boots. Much of the modern Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor leveling world remains based on the geography and quest design created for Cataclysm.

📜WoW Cataclysm Story FAQ

Who was Deathwing before Cataclysm?

Deathwing was originally Neltharion the Earth-Warder, the black Dragon Aspect charged with protecting Azeroth's deep places. The Old Gods corrupted him long before the expansion, most famously during the War of the Ancients.

What caused the Shattering in WoW?

Deathwing's violent eruption from Deepholm into Azeroth caused the Shattering. The event triggered earthquakes, floods, volcanic destruction, and permanent geographic changes across the original continents.

What was the Hour of Twilight?

The Hour of Twilight was the apocalyptic outcome sought by Deathwing, the Twilight's Hammer, and the Old Gods' forces. End Time shows one possible ruined future in which Deathwing's victory has devastated Azeroth.

Is N'Zoth fought in Cataclysm?

No. N'Zoth's influence is important to Deathwing's corruption and the expansion's Old God themes, but players do not directly fight N'Zoth during Cataclysm.

Why is Ragnaros permanently dead after Firelands?

Ragnaros is defeated inside the Firelands, his native Elemental Plane. Defeating an elemental being in its own realm makes the death permanent, unlike his earlier defeat in Molten Core.

Why did the heroes travel through time for the Dragon Soul?

The Dragon Soul had been lost after the War of the Ancients. With Murozond defeated and the timeways open, the heroes traveled into the past, recovered the artifact, and brought it to the present so it could be used against Deathwing.

Did Thrall kill Deathwing alone?

No. Thrall delivered the Dragon Soul attacks, but the victory required the four Dragon Aspects, the recovered artifact, and the mortal heroes who fought through Dragon Soul, removed Deathwing's armor, and destroyed his corrupted final form.

Why did the Dragon Aspects lose their power?

The Aspects spent their ancient, titan-given power to charge the Dragon Soul and defeat Deathwing. They declared their original purpose fulfilled and entrusted Azeroth's future to its mortal defenders.

Did Cataclysm introduce transmogrification and Raid Finder?

Yes, in the original 2010 to 2011 expansion cycle. Both systems arrived with Patch 4.3, Hour of Twilight. Later Classic releases adjusted how some features were introduced, so Cataclysm Classic should not be used as a perfect one-to-one timeline for the original feature rollout.

What expansion comes after Cataclysm?

Mists of Pandaria follows Cataclysm. Its faction war grows directly from the Alliance and Horde tensions intensified during Garrosh Hellscream's rule.
