Greetings, Denizens of the Azeroth Galaxy!

World of Warcraft: Midnight is the second chapter of the Worldsoul Saga, following Xal'atath's invasion of Quel'Thalas, the fall of the Sunwell into the Darkwell, and the united elven counterattack on Quel'Danas. Its released story continues through Curse of Ula'tek, while Blizzard's announced Eclipse update will carry the war into the Worldcore and place Xal'atath at the end of an eight-boss raid.

We won't waste your time, or your galaxy. Before I conquer every realm, without further ado, let us step into the Void.

Spoiler warning: This guide discusses the full launch campaign, all four released raids through Curse of Ula'tek, and officially announced future Midnight content.

🌀The Innkeeper’s Note (TL;DR)

Midnight turns Quel'Thalas into the front line of the Worldsoul Saga. Xal'atath attacks the Sunwell, tears the dark naaru L'ura from Alleria, and converts the sacred well into the Darkwell.

The elves answer together, Sylvanas returns at a desperate moment, and the immediate invasion ends without resolving the larger threat posed by Xal'atath. Patch 12.1 then shifts the story toward the Amani, Zul'jan, and the ancient horror Ula'tek.

  • The Sunwell is the prize: Xal'atath's campaign targets one of Azeroth's strongest magical and spiritual sites.

  • Alleria pays the heaviest price: Xal'atath uses the Void within Alleria to free L'ura, then Alleria and Turalyon vanish during the Voidspire collapse.

  • The elves stand together: Blood elves, void elves, night elves, and other elven forces unite for the March on Quel'Danas.

  • Sylvanas returns briefly: She protects Arator and Vereesa, helps force Xal'atath to retreat, then leaves the living to finish their work.

  • The Amani story continues: Curse of Ula'tek follows Zul'jarra's pursuit of Zul'jan to the Coiled Isle.

  • Ula'tek is defeated, Xal'atath is not: The released 12.1 campaign closes Ula'tek's raid arc, while Xal'atath remains the central enemy.

  • The Worldcore comes next: Blizzard has announced an eight-boss Eclipse raid with Xal'atath as its final encounter, but its live ending remains unknown.

What Azeroth Looked Like Before Midnight

Midnight begins after The War Within, the opening chapter of the Worldsoul Saga. Azeroth's Radiant Song has already reached heroes across the world, Dalaran has fallen over Khaz Algar, and Xal'atath has escaped every attempt to stop her. Her armies have suffered losses, but she has gained something more dangerous than territory: knowledge, power, and time.

Alleria Windrunner enters Midnight carrying a personal connection to the enemy. She has spent years learning to control the Void without surrendering to it, while Xal'atath knows how to turn fear and doubt into weapons. Turalyon remains devoted to the Light, and their son Arator stands between two parents who embody opposite cosmic forces. If family dinner felt tense before, imagine placing the Light, the Void, and an anxious half-elf at the same table.

Quel'Thalas also carries old wounds. Silvermoon and the Sunwell survived the Scourge, Kael'thas's fall, and the Legion, but the kingdom has never forgotten what happened when Arthas invaded. Xal'atath chooses a target whose magic, history, and people are bound together. This is not a random siege. It is an attack designed to reopen every scar at once.

Blizzard frames Midnight as the second chapter of the Worldsoul Saga and sends players back to Quel'Thalas as Xal'atath's invasion threatens Azeroth. The official expansion material also establishes rebuilt Silvermoon as the central hub and introduces Eversong Woods, Zul'Aman, Harandar, and Voidstorm as the main regions of the campaign. Blizzard's Midnight reveal.

The Midnight Story in Chronological Order

1. Xal'atath Invades Quel'Thalas

Xal'atath opens the war by attacking the elven kingdom and threatening the Sunwell. The Devouring Host pours into Quel'Thalas while defenders from Silvermoon and the wider Alliance and Horde struggle to contain an enemy arriving through the Voidstorm.

The first response is not a clean victory. Heroes save civilians, hold defensive positions, and buy time while Lor'themar Theron, Lady Liadrin, Turalyon, Arator, Alleria, and their allies try to understand the scale of the assault. A ritual involving the Sunwell temporarily pushes back the invasion, but temporary victories around magical wells have a long tradition of becoming raid mechanics later.

2. Eversong Woods Becomes a War Zone

Eversong Woods combines the familiar beauty of the blood elf homeland with the lingering scars of the Ghostlands. Lightbloom spreads through the region, creatures become increasingly hostile, and Arator works with the Haranir warrior Orweyna to investigate the disturbance.

At the same time, Void cultists and agents of Xal'atath exploit division inside Quel'Thalas. Tranquillien becomes one of the campaign's pressure points, and the heroes discover how deeply the enemy has penetrated the kingdom. Midnight's early chapters make one point clear: the invasion is not limited to monsters falling from the sky. Xal'atath attacks trust as eagerly as she attacks walls.

3. Zul'Aman and the Amani Choose Their Future

The campaign moves into Zul'Aman, now presented as a broad homeland rather than a single raid entrance. Players meet Zul'jarra, the Amani leader trying to protect her people while confronting the disappearance of the loa and the long history of conflict between trolls and elves.

Zul'jan remains central to this conflict. His anger is understandable even when his choices become disastrous. The Amani have lost land, leaders, and sacred powers, and Midnight refuses to reduce their story to a quick reunion with the elves. Cooperation grows because annihilation leaves no room for old arguments, not because generations of pain vanish after three quests and a suspiciously generous reputation reward.

4. Harandar Reveals a Hidden People

Deep beneath Azeroth, Harandar sits among immense roots at the meeting point of the world trees. Its bioluminescent jungle is home to the Haranir, whose culture, faith, and history are tied to Azeroth's deepest living systems.

Orweyna's role connects the surface war to the mysteries below. Players earn the Haranir's trust through their campaign, after which the Haranir become a playable allied race for both factions. Blizzard describes their recruitment as story-driven, keeping the unlock tied to learning who they are rather than treating them as a reward dispensed from an imperial vending machine. Blizzard's Midnight feature overview

5. The Voidstorm Leads to the Voidspire

Voidstorm is the rawest expression of Xal'atath's power in the launch campaign, a violent realm of gorges, Nexus-Points, and devouring energy. The void elves guide the effort to understand the region while the heroes prepare to assault the Voidspire.

Alleria, Turalyon, and Arator join the attack. At the top of the spire, the family finally confronts Xal'atath, but the Harbinger has prepared the encounter around Alleria's connection to the Void. Xal'atath overwhelms her, draws out the dark naaru L'ura, and turns this living weapon toward the Sunwell.

6. The Sunwell Becomes the Darkwell

L'ura's Void energy corrupts the Sunwell, transforming it into the Darkwell. Quel'Danas falls beneath darkness, and the defenders lose their greatest source of security at the moment they need it most.

Alleria and Turalyon disappear during the collapse. Arator survives, but he must continue without knowing whether his parents are alive. This gives Midnight's cosmic war a simple human center: a son watches the two people who shaped his life fall into an abyss created from their opposing powers.

The Voidspire raid is therefore not the end of the invasion. It is the disaster which creates the next battle.

7. The Elves March on Quel'Danas

Arator proposes a united counterattack. Elven peoples divided by exile, ideology, magic, and faction politics gather for the March on Quel'Danas. The target is L'ura, but the deeper goal is to reclaim a shared future from Xal'atath.

The united forces fight through the occupation and reach the corrupted well. Sylvanas Windrunner briefly returns from the Maw during the crisis, protecting Arator and Vereesa while helping force Xal'atath to withdraw. Her appearance matters because Midnight brings the Windrunner family back to the same conflict without pretending their past has been repaired.

L'ura falls, ending the immediate Darkwell invasion. The elves then contribute their different forms of magic to heal the damaged well. The scene does not erase their differences. It makes those differences useful.

8. Curse of Ula'tek Draws the War to the Coiled Isle

Patch 12.1 follows Zul'jarra as she pursues Zul'jan to the Coiled Isle, east of Zul'Aman. Blizzard describes the zone as a place of cursed waters, venomous creatures, buried history, and vaults built around an ancient danger.

Malacrass's spirit manipulates Zul'jan and feeds his desire for revenge. Under those whispers, Zul'jan frees the forgotten broods of Ula'tek and helps awaken the ancient creature imprisoned within Atal'Utek. Zul'jarra and the champions descend into the Venomous Abyss before the weapon can be unleashed on Azeroth.

The final confrontation ends with Ula'tek's defeat. Zul'jan dies after a last act intended to protect Zul'jarra, closing his arc with one choice for his sister rather than another choice for vengeance. Blizzard's later roadmap confirms Ula'tek has been defeated and reveals the creature had been constricting Kith'ix beneath the island. Midnight What's Next panel recap.

9. Confirmed Future: 12.1.5, Talebound, and Eclipse

The following material is announced, not completed live story.

Blizzard has announced patch 12.1.5 as a bridge beyond Ula'tek. Its campaign, The Promise of Tomorrow, descends into Kith'ix's prison and includes the single-boss raid The Unbinding of Kith'ix, Labyrinths, and an Aqir Invasion event. Until those events are live and their ending is confirmed, this guide does not assign a fate to Kith'ix or any character involved.

Talebound arrives with Echoes of the Worldcore as a separate PvE action RPG mode. Players enter the macabre stories of a mysterious Storyteller, return to Quillgrave between runs, and choose among Slayer, Inquisitor, and Witch. It expands Midnight as a game, but Blizzard has not presented its tales as a replacement for the main campaign. Official Talebound announcement

Eclipse is Midnight's final major content update. The campaign travels into the Mantle Vault and toward the Worldcore, where the Light-bearing forces seek a decisive confrontation with Xal'atath and the Devouring Host. The Worldcore is an announced eight-boss raid featuring Void enemies, Titan constructs, living Azerite, and Xal'atath as the final encounter. Midnight's Edge, a legendary caster dagger, will come from a multi-step journey connected to the raid. Official Eclipse and Worldcore preview

Blizzard has announced the confrontation. Blizzard has not published its live ending. Xal'atath should not be described as defeated, killed, redeemed, imprisoned, or victorious until Eclipse releases and the final cinematic confirms the outcome.

Zones and Important Locations

Silvermoon City

Rebuilt Silvermoon serves as Midnight's central capital. Its restoration gives the expansion a home worth defending, not only another collection of portals and profession tables. The city embodies the blood elves' survival after the Scourge and makes Xal'atath's attack feel personal from the opening hours.

Eversong Woods and the Ghostlands

The combined region carries the beauty of Quel'Thalas beside its oldest wound. Lightbloom, Void attacks, political tension, and the road to Quel'Danas keep the zone tied to both the family story and the larger invasion.

Zul'Aman

Zul'Aman presents the Amani homeland, forest tribes, loa mysteries, and Zul'jarra's leadership. The zone gives the trolls room to exist beyond their older role as raid enemies.

Harandar

Harandar is a glowing primordial jungle beneath Azeroth, rooted where great world-tree systems meet. It introduces the Haranir and broadens the Worldsoul Saga's interest in life hidden below the surface.

Voidstorm

Voidstorm is Xal'atath's hostile staging ground and the home of the Voidspire. Its collapsing landscapes and concentrated Void energy make the zone feel less like conquered land and more like reality losing an argument.

Quel'Danas and the Sunwell

Quel'Danas is the spiritual and strategic heart of the campaign. The Sunwell becomes the Darkwell, L'ura is confronted there, and the elven peoples begin its healing after the invasion.

The Coiled Isle and Atal'Utek

The Coiled Isle holds the Vaults of Atal'Utek and the Venomous Abyss. Its prison complex preserves the Amani's buried history with Ula'tek, a weapon so dangerous its creators had to seal it away.

The Mantle Vault and Worldcore

These locations are announced for Eclipse. The Mantle Vault is a Titan-hidden region populated by stone and Azerite life, while the Worldcore raid moves the story closer to Azeroth's Worldsoul. Blizzard has not confirmed the Worldsoul's full identity or final fate.

Season 1 deliberately divides nine bosses among three linked raid zones: the six-boss Voidspire, the one-boss Dreamrift, and the two-boss March on Quel'Danas. Blizzard described the structure as one unfolding Midnight story rather than one large opening fortress. Official Midnight raid announcement

The Venomous Abyss contains eight bosses and ends with Ula'tek. Blizzard's raid overview identifies Malacrass as the spirit controlling Zul'jan at the Coiled Altar and explains Ula'tek's origin as a weapon once imprisoned by the Amani. Official Venomous Abyss raid overview

Features That Changed World of Warcraft

Player Housing Becomes an Evergreen Home

Housing allows players to earn a plot, join a neighborhood, decorate interiors and exteriors, collect furnishings through old and new activities, and complete community Endeavors. Its importance reaches beyond Midnight's campaign because the feature gives old raids, professions, achievements, and world content a new reward language. Every forgotten chair now looks nervous.

Haranir Become a Playable Allied Race

Players recruit the Haranir by completing their story and earning their trust. They can join either faction and choose from Druid, Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, Priest, Mage, Warlock, Monk, or Shaman.

Devourer Gives Demon Hunters a Ranged Specialization

Devourer is the third Demon Hunter specialization. It uses stolen powers, harvested souls, and Void abilities at range, widening a class which had remained limited to Havoc and Vengeance since Legion.

Prey Turns the Open World Into a Hunt

Prey lets players choose escalating targets at Normal, Hard, or Nightmare difficulty. The target can attack the hunter during the pursuit, giving outdoor play more tension than another polite circle on the map. Blizzard has announced Agony as an additional difficulty for Eclipse.

Three Raids Tell One Opening Story

Midnight Season 1 replaces the familiar single opening raid with three connected locations. The structure lets the campaign move from Xal'atath's stronghold, through a separate dream threat, and back to Quel'Danas for the finale.

Story Mode Keeps the Main Plot Accessible

Story Mode allows lore-focused players to witness vital raid conclusions without joining a full progression group. For a saga built around campaign continuity, this keeps major character events inside the story path instead of hiding them behind someone typing “link achievement” in chat.

How Midnight Ends

Midnight does not have a confirmed final ending yet.

The released launch story ends with L'ura defeated, Xal'atath driven away from Quel'Danas, and the elven peoples working together to heal the damaged well. Alleria and Turalyon remain missing, Arator has survived the collapse of his family, and Xal'atath remains active.

The released Curse of Ula'tek story ends with Ula'tek defeated and Zul'jan dead after protecting Zul'jarra. That victory reveals a deeper danger below the Coiled Isle, leading into the announced Kith'ix content.

The expansion's true finale will arrive with Eclipse. Blizzard has confirmed the road to the Worldcore, an eight-boss raid, and Xal'atath as its final encounter. Until the update is live, any claim describing her final fate belongs in a theory article, preferably beside a corkboard, red string, and one gnome insisting the Titans planned everything.

How Midnight Connects to The Last Titan

Midnight moves the Worldsoul Saga from Khaz Algar's underground discoveries toward Azeroth's deepest cosmic conflict. The Radiant Song becomes more urgent, Xal'atath draws closer to the Worldsoul, and Eclipse sends players into Titan vaults surrounding the Worldcore.

This creates the bridge to The Last Titan without solving its mysteries too early. The Titans, Azeroth, the Worldsoul, the Light, and the Void are converging, but Blizzard has not published enough information to declare the Worldsoul's true nature or decide who controls it after Eclipse.

The safest confirmed connection is simple: Xal'atath's Worldcore campaign concludes Midnight's central conflict and prepares the next chapter of the Worldsoul Saga. The exact cost of that confrontation remains hidden.
