Greetings, Denizens of the Azeroth Galaxy!
The Burning Crusade story follows the Horde and Alliance through the reopened Dark Portal into Outland, where they dismantle the armies of the Burning Legion and the fractured rule of Illidan Stormrage. The campaign ends back on Azeroth, where Kael'thas Sunstrider tries to summon Kil'jaeden through the Sunwell, only for Azeroth's defenders to stop him and Prophet Velen to help restore the sacred font.
Greetings, Denizens of the Outland Galaxy! The Dark Portal is open, the sky is broken, and everyone with a quest marker has decided you are qualified to repair an exploding planet. We will not waste your time, or your galaxy, so before Emperor Noob Sidious claims every fel reaver as imperial property, without further ado, let us cross the portal.
Spoiler warning: This retrospective covers the complete story of The Burning Crusade and references later developments from Legion, Shadowlands, and Midnight.

🌀The Innkeeper’s Note (TL;DR)
The Burning Crusade is less a single military campaign than a collection of connected wars across the remains of Draenor. Illidan is presented as Outland's dangerous ruler, Lady Vashj and Kael'thas control vital territories, and the Burning Legion waits behind them all. The expansion begins as an invasion of Outland, becomes an assault on Illidan's regime, and closes with a Legion offensive at the Sunwell.
Draenor Did Not Vanish: Outland is the shattered remainder of the orc and draenei homeworld, torn apart when Ner'zhul opened too many dimensional portals.
The Portal War Starts the Journey: Doom Lord Kazzak reopens the Dark Portal, prompting Horde and Alliance expeditions to attack the demonic invasion at its source.
Illidan Rules a Broken Kingdom: Illidan seized the Black Temple after overthrowing Magtheridon, with Lady Vashj, Kael'thas, and Akama serving his new order in different ways.
Two New Peoples Change the Factions: Blood elves join the Horde while the draenei join the Alliance, bringing paladins to the Horde and shaman to the Alliance.
The Naaru Enter WoW's Central Story: Shattrath City, the Sha'tar, M'uru, and the Exodar establish the naaru as a major force in Warcraft's conflict between Light and fel magic.
Illidan Is Not the Final Threat: His defeat closes the Black Temple campaign, but Kael'thas returns and tries to bring Kil'jaeden into Azeroth.
The Sunwell Is Reborn: Kil'jaeden is forced back through the Sunwell, not killed, and Velen uses the purified heart of M'uru to restore the font with both arcane and holy power.

What Azeroth Looked Like Before The Burning Crusade
The original World of Warcraft introduced a wounded Azeroth still dealing with the aftermath of the Third War. The Alliance and Horde had rebuilt enough to field armies, but the Burning Legion remained an active enemy. Far beyond Azeroth, the consequences of Warcraft II and Warcraft III were still tearing Draenor apart.
Draenor had once been the home of the orcs and draenei. Near the end of Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal, the orc shaman Ner'zhul opened several portals while trying to escape the Alliance expedition. The magical strain shattered the planet. What remained became Outland, a chain of landmasses suspended in the Twisting Nether.
Years later, Illidan Stormrage fled to Outland after failing to destroy the Frozen Throne. Lady Vashj and her naga followed him. Kael'thas Sunstrider and a group of blood elves also joined Illidan after persecution by Grand Marshal Garithos and imprisonment by Alliance forces in Lordaeron. Together, they overthrew Magtheridon, closed demonic gateways, and seized the Black Temple.
Illidan called himself Lord of Outland, but his realm was never stable. Magtheridon remained alive beneath Hellfire Citadel. Lady Vashj occupied Coilfang Reservoir. Kael'thas took control of Tempest Keep and its manaforges. Akama and the Broken served Illidan while quietly resenting his occupation of their sacred temple. The Burning Legion still held territory, and Kil'jaeden had not forgiven Illidan for failing against the Lich King.
Back on Azeroth, two displaced peoples searched for allies:
The blood elves of Quel'Thalas were struggling with the loss of the Sunwell and an intense dependence on magic. Under Regent Lord Lor'themar Theron, they joined the Horde while hoping Kael'thas would secure their future.
The draenei escaped Outland aboard the Exodar, a vessel connected to the naaru fortress Tempest Keep. The damaged ship crashed on Azuremyst Isle, and Prophet Velen led his people into the Alliance.
This setup matters. The Horde and Alliance do not enter a clean war between heroes and villains. They walk into a collapsing web of old loyalties, desperate bargains, Legion influence, and leaders who believe survival excuses nearly anything.
Why the Dark Portal Reopened
Doom Lord Kazzak reopened the Dark Portal and passed into Outland. Demons began pouring through the gateway into the Blasted Lands, forcing the Horde and Alliance to respond. Their expeditions crossed the portal to stop the invasion before Azeroth faced another full Legion assault.
The first sight on the other side says everything: Hellfire Peninsula is red, scarred, and crowded with armies. The Stair of Destiny becomes a battlefield between Azeroth's defenders and Legion forces. From there, each faction establishes a foothold and discovers how much of Outland has fallen under hostile control.
The Alliance also reconnects with members of the Sons of Lothar, veterans left beyond the portal after the events of Warcraft II. The Horde encounters the Mag'har, uncorrupted orcs who escaped the demonic blood curse. Among them is Garrosh Hellscream, a grieving young leader whose meeting with Thrall changes the future of the Horde.
Outland Zones and Important Locations
Hellfire Peninsula
The warfront beyond the Dark Portal. Hellfire Citadel, the Fel Horde, Magtheridon, and the surviving Sons of Lothar make this the military opening of the expansion.
Zangarmarsh
A vast fungal wetland endangered by Lady Vashj's naga. Coilfang Reservoir ties the zone's ecological story to Serpentshrine Cavern.
Terokkar Forest and Shattrath City
Terokkar contains Shattrath, Auchindoun, draenei ruins, arakkoa settlements, and the conflict surrounding the Bone Wastes. Shattrath serves as the neutral capital and strategic center of the Outland campaign.
Nagrand
The greenest surviving region of Draenor. Nagrand develops the Mag'har, Garrosh, the Kurenai, Oshu'gun, and the older cultural history shared by orcs and draenei.
Blade's Edge Mountains
A harsh region of spikes, ravines, ogres, gronn, demons, and dragons. Gruul's power and the rivalry among local factions show how fragmented Outland has become.
Netherstorm
An arcane wasteland surrounding Tempest Keep. Kael'thas and his forces exploit the region through manaforges while the Consortium, ethereals, goblins, and naaru-linked groups pursue their own goals.
Shadowmoon Valley
Illidan's stronghold and the darkest expression of his rule. The Black Temple dominates the zone, while Akama's rebellion and the Netherwing storyline show resistance growing around him.
Azuremyst and Bloodmyst Isles
The draenei starting regions. The Exodar's crash scatters dangerous crystals and survivors across the islands, giving Alliance players their first direct view of Velen's people.
Eversong Woods and the Ghostlands
The blood elf starting regions. Their quests show the damage left by the Scourge, the loss of the Sunwell, the danger of magical dependency, and the political road into the Horde.
Zul'Aman
The Amani capital in the Ghostlands. Zul'jin's raid connects the blood elves' new Horde membership to an older war over Quel'Thalas.
Isle of Quel'Danas and the Sunwell
The final endgame hub. Players build the Shattered Sun Offensive's position through daily quests, assault Magisters' Terrace, and enter Sunwell Plateau to stop Kil'jaeden.
Caverns of Time: Mount Hyjal
This raid does not move the present-day Outland plot forward. The bronze dragonflight sends players into the past to preserve the Battle of Mount Hyjal, where the mortal races defeated Archimonde at the end of Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos.
One narrative warning belongs beside this list: Kael'thas is not permanently killed in Tempest Keep. His true TBC defeat happens in Magisters' Terrace, a five-player dungeon released with the Isle of Quel'Danas campaign.
Features That Changed World of Warcraft
Flying Mounts Changed How Players Read a Zone
At level 70, players could fly in Outland. Flight made vertical spaces such as Blade's Edge Mountains, Netherstorm, and Shadowmoon Valley work in new ways. It also created endgame quest hubs and locations designed around aerial access.
Heroic Dungeons Created a Second Endgame Path
TBC introduced Heroic versions of its dungeons. These harder runs used reputation-linked access, stronger enemies, improved rewards, and Badges of Justice. Five-player content remained relevant after leveling, both for gearing and for raid attunements.
Raids Moved Away From Forty Players
Karazhan used a 10-player format while the larger progression raids used 25 players. This change became the foundation for WoW's later raid structure and reduced the organizational scale required by the original game's 40-player endgame.
Attunements Made Progression Feel Like a Campaign
Access to Heroic dungeons and raids often required reputation, keys, long quest chains, or victories in earlier content. These requirements connected dungeons and raids into a coherent journey, although the burden could make replacing raid members painful. A new recruit did not merely join the raid; first, the guild escorted them through an administrative labyrinth worthy of the Burning Legion.
Arenas Established Rated Small-Team PvP
Rated Arena competition arrived with 2v2, 3v3, and 5v5 teams, seasonal rewards, and a distinct gear path. Arena became one of WoW's longest-running competitive systems.
Blood Elves and Draenei Broke the Old Class Divide
Blood elf paladins brought the paladin class to the Horde, while draenei shaman brought shaman to the Alliance. The expansion preserved faction identity but ended the original faction-exclusive class split.
Jewelcrafting and Sockets Deepened Itemization
Jewelcrafting allowed players to cut gems for socketed equipment. Socket colors and bonuses created another layer of gearing decisions and gave professions a stronger role in character progression.
Daily Quests Built Repeatable Endgame Hubs
Ogri'la, the Sha'tari Skyguard, Netherwing, and the Isle of Quel'Danas helped establish the daily-quest model. The Shattered Sun Offensive made the format feel communal by allowing repeated player activity to advance the state of the island.
How The Burning Crusade Ended
TBC does not end with Illidan's defeat. The true finale occurs at the Sunwell.
Kael'thas returns from Outland, takes control of the Isle of Quel'Danas, and uses the Sunwell as a gateway for Kil'jaeden. The Shattered Sun Offensive leads the counterattack. Kael dies in Magisters' Terrace, M'uru's darkened form is defeated within Sunwell Plateau, and Anveena sacrifices herself during the confrontation with Kil'jaeden.
The raid forces Kil'jaeden back through the Sunwell before his summoning is complete. Velen then reveals a purified remnant of M'uru and places its power within the font. The Sunwell is renewed with arcane energy and the Light.
For the blood elves, this ending changes the meaning of their entire campaign. They began the expansion following a prince who promised salvation through greater power. They finish after rejecting his Legion bargain, cooperating with the draenei and the naaru, and accepting a restored Sunwell created through sacrifice.
How TBC Connects to Legion, Shadowlands, and Midnight
Legion Reframes Illidan Without Erasing His Crimes
In 2007, players saw Illidan chiefly as a dangerous ruler whose armies, lieutenants, and stronghold threatened Outland. Legion adds missing context. Illidan had been building the Illidari and pursuing a war against the Burning Legion, often through cruel methods and with little concern for anyone caught beneath his plans.
This later material does not turn every TBC action into a misunderstanding. Illidan still conquered the Black Temple, controlled Akama, trained demon hunters through lethal trials, and allowed brutality within his forces. Legion changes the frame from simple villainy to ruthless anti-Legion obsession.
Illidan returns after Gul'dan's attempt to use his body. He helps carry the war to Argus, where Kil'jaeden is finally killed aboard his ship before the assault on Antorus. TBC's apparent ending for both Illidan and Kil'jaeden was only the middle of their stories.
Shadowlands Revisits Kael'thas and Lady Vashj
Kael'thas appears in Revendreth, where souls burdened by pride are pushed toward atonement. His story directly confronts the arrogance and resentment that drove his fall. Lady Vashj appears in Maldraxxus, where her cunning and martial skill earn her a place among the realm's defenders.
These returns do not alter their TBC defeats. They show what happened to their souls and give later writers room to examine the motives behind two of Illidan's most famous lieutenants.
Midnight Returns to Quel'Thalas and the Sunwell
The link to Midnight is direct. Blizzard's expansion returns players to Quel'Thalas as Xal'atath's Void invasion threatens the elven kingdom. The Sunwell and the Isle of Quel'Danas again become central to Azeroth's survival, culminating in the March on Quel'Danas raid.
TBC supplies the emotional foundation for this conflict. Without the blood elves' magical loss, Kael'thas's betrayal, Anveena's sacrifice, M'uru's transformation, and Velen's restoration of the Sunwell, the stakes of returning to Quel'Danas carry far less weight. What was once the endpoint of the first WoW expansion becomes a frontline in the Worldsoul Saga.
📜The Burning Crusade Story FAQ
What is Outland?
Outland is the shattered remainder of Draenor, the original homeworld of the orcs and draenei. Ner'zhul's uncontrolled portals tore the planet apart, leaving fragments suspended in the Twisting Nether.
Why did the Horde and Alliance enter Outland?
Doom Lord Kazzak reopened the Dark Portal, allowing Legion forces to threaten Azeroth. Horde and Alliance armies crossed the portal to stop the invasion at its source.
Was Illidan working for the Burning Legion?
Not during the central TBC campaign. Illidan had served Kil'jaeden under pressure before fleeing to Outland, but he also opposed the Legion and built forces to fight it. TBC emphasized his tyranny in Outland, while Legion later revealed the larger anti-Legion purpose behind many of his preparations.
Why did Kael'thas betray the blood elves?
Kael's pursuit of power and a solution to his people's magical hunger led him from the Alliance to Illidan and finally to Kil'jaeden. By the Quel'Danas campaign, he treats the Sunwell and his own people as instruments for a Legion summoning.
Did Kael'thas die in Tempest Keep?
No. He survives the encounter in Tempest Keep: The Eye. Players kill him later in Magisters' Terrace on the Isle of Quel'Danas.
Did players kill Kil'jaeden in The Burning Crusade?
No. The raid prevents his full arrival and pushes him back through the Sunwell. Kil'jaeden survives until Legion.
Did Illidan truly die at the Black Temple?
TBC presented the Black Temple battle as his defeat and death. His body remained intact under the Wardens' control, allowing his soul and body to be reunited during Legion.
Is the Battle for Mount Hyjal part of the current Outland war?
No. It is a Caverns of Time raid set during the final battle of Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. Players protect history by helping ensure Archimonde's original defeat.
Why are blood elves in the Horde?
The blood elves were isolated after the destruction of Quel'Thalas and their mistreatment under Garithos. The Forsaken helped open diplomatic ties, and Lor'themar's people joined the Horde while Kael's followers searched Outland for a future.
Why are draenei in the Alliance?
Velen's draenei escaped Outland aboard the Exodar and crashed on Azuremyst Isle. Their values, history, and new position on Azeroth led them into the Alliance.
What happened to the Sunwell?
Arthas had corrupted the original Sunwell during the fall of Quel'Thalas, and the elves destroyed the tainted font. At the end of TBC, Velen uses the purified heart of M'uru to restore the Sunwell as a source of arcane and holy energy.
Is Outland the same Draenor visited in Warlords of Draenor?
No. Outland is the ruined remains of the main-timeline Draenor. Warlords of Draenor visits an alternate version of Draenor before the planet's destruction.
