Greetings, Denizens of the Azeroth Galaxy!
The War Within begins the Worldsoul Saga with Azeroth calling for help through the Radiant Song while Xal'atath turns the nerubians, the Black Blood, and the Dark Heart into pieces of a much larger Void campaign. The heroes save Khaz Algar, overthrow Queen Ansurek and Gallywix, and defeat Dimensius, but Xal'atath escapes stronger than before and carries the war directly into Midnight.
Spoiler warning: This retrospective covers the full expansion story, including the endings of Nerub-ar Palace, Liberation of Undermine, and Manaforge Omega.
Released on August 26, 2024, The War Within is World of Warcraft's tenth expansion and the first chapter of the Worldsoul Saga.

🌀The Innkeeper’s Note (TL;DR)
If you remember only one detail, remember this: every local victory helps reveal Xal'atath's wider plan, but none of those victories stops her. The campaign moves from the caverns of Khaz Algar to the goblin capital of Undermine and finally to the shattered world of K'aresh. Along the way, familiar heroes confront grief, faith, revenge, and responsibility while Azeroth's enemies compete for control of the Dark Heart.
The Worldsoul calls for help: The Radiant Song draws heroes toward a danger beneath Azeroth.
Dalaran falls: Xal'atath drains the city's arcane power into the Dark Heart and destroys one of Warcraft's most famous capitals.
Khaz Algar unites: Earthen, Arathi, and nerubian rebels join the Horde and Alliance against Queen Ansurek.
Khadgar survives: The archmage was trapped inside the Dark Heart, not killed in Dalaran's destruction.
Undermine revolts: Renzik's sacrifice pushes Gazlowe and the goblin cartels into open rebellion against Gallywix.
Dimensius returns and falls: The Shadowguard revives the Void Lord within Manaforge Omega, where the heroes contain him.
Xal'atath wins the ending: She reclaims an empowered Dark Heart, kills Locus-Walker, and prepares her assault on Quel'Thalas.
Even Emperor Noob Sidious must admire the efficiency. Most villains need three meetings, a fortress, and a monologue. Xal'atath turns our raid victories into free delivery service.

What Azeroth Looked Like Before The War Within
The story begins after Dragonflight. Fyrakk is dead, Amirdrassil has bloomed into Azeroth, and the dragonflights have regained their purpose. The world appears to have earned a quiet moment, which in Warcraft usually means someone has already pulled the next boss.
That warning arrives as the Radiant Song, a vision heard by selected people across Azeroth. Many see a brilliant light at the heart of the world and feel an urgent call to protect it. Anduin Wrynn, Jaina Proudmoore, Thrall, and other heroes experience the phenomenon in different ways, but Magni Bronzebeard hears only silence. The former Speaker for Azeroth can no longer understand the worldsoul as he once did.
Xal'atath is already moving. Once the sentient entity bound to the Shadow Priest artifact weapon, she now walks freely in the body of the elf Inanis. During the final chapters of Dragonflight, she acquires the Dark Heart, an ancient Void relic capable of absorbing vast amounts of power. She also gains the loyalty of Queen Ansurek, the ambitious ruler of Azj-Kahet.
This is the starting position of the Worldsoul Saga: Azeroth is calling, the heroes do not yet understand the message, and Xal'atath holds a device built to consume power on a terrifying scale.
The War Within Main Story in Chronological Order
1. The Radiant Song Leads the Heroes to Dalaran
Khadgar summons Azeroth's champions to Dalaran after studying both the Radiant Song and Xal'atath's movements. Alleria Windrunner takes a central role because her connection to the Void lets her sense the Harbinger, but the hunt becomes personal. Xal'atath knows how to provoke Alleria's fear of losing control and repeatedly uses that fear against her.
The plan is to move Dalaran toward Khaz Algar and investigate the disturbance below. Before the city can safely arrive, nerubian forces assault it. Xal'atath confronts Khadgar, draws Dalaran's arcane energy into the Dark Heart, and destroys the city.
Survivors crash on the Isle of Dorn. Khadgar appears to have died, countless residents are lost, and the expedition begins in grief rather than triumph. Dalaran has survived wars, invasions, and one previous destruction, but this time the floating city becomes the opening sacrifice in Xal'atath's campaign.
2. The Isle of Dorn and the Earthen Crisis
On the Isle of Dorn, the survivors meet the earthen, titan-forged people divided by their relationship with the edicts left by their makers. Dornogal remains their capital, but the old order is failing. The Awakening Machine no longer functions as intended, many earthen question their assigned purpose, and the hostile Unbound reject the directives that once defined their lives.
The invading nerubians strike earthen settlements and destroy the Stormriders' ability to defend the island. Heroes work with figures such as Adelgonn, Merrix, Baelgrim, and Brinthe to stabilize the region. Baelgrim's death leaves the Stormriders without their long-standing leader, while Magni sacrifices his diamond form to restore the earthen Awakening Machine. He survives as a mortal dwarf and finally hears Azeroth again.
The earthen story is more than local politics. Their decision to choose their own path, rather than obey every Titan edict, introduces one of the Worldsoul Saga's central questions: were the Titans guiding Azeroth, controlling it, or doing both?
3. The Ringing Deeps and the Machine Speakers
The expedition descends into the Ringing Deeps, an industrial cavern maintained by the Machine Speakers. Their great infrastructure is failing while kobolds, hostile creatures, and nerubian attackers overwhelm the region.
High Speaker Eirich becomes consumed by desperation and the influence of the Black Blood, the blood of the Old Gods buried inside Azeroth. Brinthe and the heroes uncover the damage, confront Eirich, and help the Machine Speakers face a future no longer governed by blind obedience to broken systems.
The Ringing Deeps also reveals why Xal'atath's war reaches far beyond one nerubian queen. Black Blood can corrupt life, empower weapons, and feed the Dark Heart. The substance becomes a thread connecting Khaz Algar, Gallywix's operations, and Xal'atath's later plans.
4. Hallowfall, Beledar, and Anduin's Faith
Far below the surface lies Hallowfall, home to an isolated Arathi expedition. Their settlements survive beneath Beledar, a colossal crystal that shifts between Light and Void. When Beledar darkens, shadow creatures attack, and the Lamplighters defend the remaining settlements.
The heroes meet General Steelstrike and Faerin Lothar, a young Arathi champion whose courage does not depend on pretending she feels no fear. Anduin travels with them while struggling with the trauma left by the Jailer and his forced actions in Shadowlands. He believes he has lost the Light because he no longer deserves it.
The conflict in Hallowfall gives Anduin a path back. He learns that faith is not a reward for feeling pure. It is a choice to help someone when help is needed. That lesson becomes crucial when Khadgar returns.
5. Azj-Kahet, Queen Ansurek, and the Severed Threads
Azj-Kahet is not a nest of mindless monsters. It is a complete nerubian civilization with nobles, workers, merchants, spies, traditions, and political factions. Queen Ansurek has overthrown her mother, Queen Neferess, and accepted Xal'atath's promise of evolution through the Void.
Ansurek's chosen followers undergo Ascension, a transformation that grants power while binding her kingdom more closely to Xal'atath. She has overthrown her mother and left the former queen twisted and presumed dead. Nerubians who resist Ansurek organize through the Severed Threads, an alliance led by three masked figures:
The Weaver, who is revealed to be the surviving Queen Neferess.
The General, Anub'azal, a military leader opposing Ansurek's rule.
The Vizier, Executor Nizrek, a political operator with his own network and ambitions.
Working with these rebels, the heroes weaken Ansurek's forces and expose what Ascension costs. Xal'atath is not building a healthier nerubian future. She is consuming a civilization's fear and ambition for her own war.
6. The Battle for Khaz Algar and Khadgar's Return
The Horde and Alliance arrive in force, joining the earthen, Arathi, and Severed Threads in the Algari Offensive. The united army stops a major nerubian assault in Hallowfall, but Xal'atath uses the battle to channel Beledar's power into the Dark Heart.
Alleria finally changes her approach. Instead of firing from rage, she focuses on protecting the people beside her and lands a precise shot that cracks the Dark Heart. Xal'atath escapes, but the damaged relic releases its prisoner: Khadgar.
The archmage had been absorbed along with Dalaran's energy. He emerges alive but close to death. Anduin calls upon the Light and heals him, proving to himself that his connection was never gone beyond recovery.
This scene resolves two personal wars at once. Alleria learns that control is stronger than obsession, while Anduin acts from compassion instead of shame.
7. Nerub-ar Palace and the Fall of Queen Ansurek
The Severed Threads lead the final attack on Nerub-ar Palace. Inside, the heroes confront Ansurek's military leaders, experiments, and Ascended servants before reaching the queen herself.
Queen Ansurek attempts a final Ascension but falls. Xal'atath appears only long enough to make the truth clear: Ansurek was useful, not valued. The Harbinger leaves her former ally to die and moves on with her larger plan.
Ansurek's defeat frees Azj-Kahet from her reign, but it does not end the Void threat. Xal'atath has already harvested power from Dalaran and Beledar, and the Dark Heart remains the object every faction now wants to control.
8. Undermine, Renzik, and the Goblin Revolution
The trail of Black Blood leads toward goblin operations in the Ringing Deeps and then to Undermine, the underground capital of goblin society. Former Trade Prince Jastor Gallywix has returned with the Darkfuse cartel, a private army, and a scheme to weaponize Black Blood.
Gazlowe, Renzik "The Shiv," Orweyna, Alleria, and the goblin cartels investigate Gallywix's network. The tyrant controls rivals through threats, hostages, and business deals in which every clause somehow translates to "Gallywix wins."
The Shadowguard ethereals enter the struggle and steal the Dark Heart from Gallywix. He loses Xal'atath's favor, but the cost of his rule continues to rise. When Nikki the Fixer attempts to assassinate Gazlowe, Renzik pushes Gazlowe aside and takes the fatal shot.
Renzik's sacrifice ignites the revolution. Gazlowe stops preparing to walk away and helps unite the cartels and citizens of Undermine. They storm the Gallagio during the Liberation of Undermine raid and defeat Chrome King Gallywix. In a fitting final act of goblin engineering, his damaged mech collapses and crushes him after he ignores Gazlowe's warning.
Undermine is free, but Xal'atath's missing relic is already on its way to a more dangerous destination.
9. Ghosts of K'aresh and the Return of Dimensius
Phase-Thief Azir takes the Dark Heart to K'aresh, the shattered homeworld of the ethereals. Long ago, the Void Lord Dimensius consumed the world and stripped the K'areshi of their physical bodies. Now the Shadowguard plans to restore him through Manaforge Omega.
Alleria travels to K'aresh with her mentor, Locus-Walker. They join Ve'nari, the K'aresh Trust, brokers, ethereals, and Wastelanders trying to preserve what remains of the world. Tazavesh, once encountered in the Shadowlands, has returned to its place near K'aresh and serves as a vital base.
Xal'atath enters an uneasy alliance with Locus-Walker because both want Dimensius stopped. Trusting her sounds like inviting a rogue to count the guild bank, but the immediate threat is too great to ignore.
The campaign leads into Manaforge Omega, where the Shadowguard attempts to revive Dimensius. The heroes defeat Nexus-King Salhadaar and battle the All-Devouring within his own colossal form. Dimensius is weakened and sealed within the Dark Heart.
Then Xal'atath makes her move. Claiming that the relic is unstable, she remains behind while the others escape. She emerges through the Dark Heart, overloads it with Void energy, kills Locus-Walker, reclaims the relic, and abandons K'aresh.
Dimensius has been stopped, but his power now strengthens Xal'atath's weapon. Alleria swears to avenge her mentor. A final vision warns that Quel'Thalas and Silvermoon are next.
Features That Changed World of Warcraft
Warbands Made the Account the Main Character
Warbands connect a player's characters across realms within the same region through shared progression and collections. Warbound gear, shared reputation progress for supported factions, account-wide storage, and the character-select campsite made playing alts feel less like beginning a second job.
The system also fits the expansion's theme. The War Within is about coalitions rather than one hero carrying the entire universe on a suspiciously broad shoulder plate.
Delves Opened a New Endgame Path
Delves are short, scalable adventures designed for solo players or groups of up to five, usually with an NPC companion such as Brann Bronzebeard. They brought seasonal progression, Great Vault rewards, bosses, stories, and hidden challenges to players who did not want every endgame night tied to a raid roster or Mythic+ timer.
Hero Talents Expanded Class Fantasy
Hero Talents add themed progression above the ordinary class and specialization trees. Names such as Rider of the Apocalypse, Dark Ranger, Mountain Thane, and Sunfury connect combat choices to famous Warcraft archetypes.
Their long-term importance comes from presentation as much as power. They gave each specialization a clearer fantasy layer without adding a new class or another temporary artifact system.
Story Mode Made Raid Endings More Accessible
Story Mode lets small groups experience selected raid finales at a story-focused difficulty. Nerub-ar Palace was the first raid to use the feature, allowing more players to see Queen Ansurek's defeat without joining a traditional raid group.
Liberation of Undermine and Manaforge Omega continued the approach. For an expansion whose main plot ends inside raids, that access matters.
Skyriding Became a Wider Mount System
The fast flight system introduced as Dragonriding expanded into Skyriding and became available to many existing flying mounts. Exploration kept the momentum of Dragonflight while moving beyond dragon-only customization.
Earthen Joined Both Factions
The earthen became an Allied Race available to the Horde and Alliance. Their story about memory, duty, and freedom from Titan edicts turns their unlock into part of the expansion's central conflict rather than an isolated recruitment errand.
How The War Within Ended
The heroes defeat Dimensius in Manaforge Omega and prevent the Void Lord from consuming what remains of K'aresh. That is the military victory.
The strategic result belongs to Xal'atath. She uses the heroes and her temporary allies to remove Dimensius as an independent threat, kills Locus-Walker, and escapes with the Dark Heart carrying the Void Lord's power. Alleria loses her mentor and gains a renewed purpose, while the survivors receive a warning of an approaching attack on Silvermoon.
So, did the heroes win The War Within? They saved Khaz Algar, Azj-Kahet, Undermine, and K'aresh from immediate destruction. They did not stop the war. They survived its opening act.
How The War Within Connects to Later WoW
The War Within is the first chapter of the Worldsoul Saga, followed by Midnight and The Last Titan. Its ending moves the story into Midnight through several direct connections:
Xal'atath remains the main threat. She is not defeated in Manaforge Omega and leaves with a more powerful Dark Heart.
Quel'Thalas becomes the next battlefield. The warning at the end points toward Silvermoon and the elven kingdom.
Alleria's hunt becomes more personal. Xal'atath kills Locus-Walker and threatens everything Alleria loves.
The Void invasion reaches Azeroth openly. Xal'atath shifts from manipulation below the surface to a direct assault.
Azeroth's worldsoul remains the prize. The Radiant Song, K'aresh's broken worldsoul, and the Dark Heart show what can happen when cosmic powers reach a living world.
The Titans face deeper questions. The earthen rejecting fixed edicts prepares players to examine the Titans' plans more critically before The Last Titan.
The expansion title also works on two levels. The literal war happens beneath Azeroth, but the strongest character arcs concern battles within Alleria, Anduin, Magni, the earthen, and the divided peoples of Khaz Algar.
