Modern WoW, Midnight

Modern WoW is the live, continuously updated version of World of Warcraft. Midnight is its current expansion and continues the Worldsoul Saga. This is the version with the current campaign, seasonal raids, Mythic+, rated PvP, Delves, player housing, modern collections, faster leveling, and the newest class balance.

Choose Midnight if you want to play where new patches, balance changes, seasonal rewards, and most current guides are focused. It is also the easiest place to play in shorter sessions because modern WoW offers matchmaking, account-wide systems, fast travel, many solo activities, and a broad range of difficulty levels.

Midnight is the strongest starting point for a player who has never touched WoW. The game teaches more through its interface and early experience, while its current population is spread across open-world content, dungeons, raids, PvP, collecting, and housing. My Imperial warning is simple: the map contains twenty years of icons, and every icon believes it is your new supervisor.

World of Warcraft: Forever

Status: Officially scheduled, not yet launched.

World of Warcraft: Forever is a new permanent WoW experience that will live alongside modern and Classic WoW. Blizzard describes it as a reimagined original Azeroth where the world, community, and leveling journey carry more weight. It is set after Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom and before Molten Core, has a level cap of 60, and is designed to grow with new stories, regions, dungeons, raids, and updates.

Forever launches globally on November 4, 2026. Its beta is scheduled to run from September 17 through October 21, 2026. Blizzard says the live base game will be included with an active WoW subscription or game time. Beta access is included in the Skyborne Epic Pack and Warcraft Forever Collection, while the upgrade packs contain optional extras. Is Forever Classic Plus? Players will use that nickname because Forever begins with original Azeroth and adds new ideas. Blizzard's official positioning is more precise: Forever is a new permanent home alongside modern and Classic WoW. Treat “Classic Plus” as community shorthand, not the official product name.

Choose Forever if you like level 60 Azeroth but want new content instead of a museum-perfect recreation. Do not choose it solely from assumptions based on Classic Era. Forever is its own game version, and its final live balance, community shape, and content cadence can only be judged after launch.

WoW Classic Era

Classic Era preserves the original level 60 version of Azeroth rather than moving its realms into later expansions. Leveling is slower, resources matter, travel takes time, groups form more organically, and class design reflects vanilla WoW's older philosophy.

Choose Classic Era if your ideal WoW night includes reading quest text, walking to a dungeon, recognizing players on your realm, and celebrating a green-quality weapon upgrade. The rough edges are part of the attraction. The game asks for patience and social effort, then pays you back with a strong sense of place.

Classic Era is not the best match if your main goals are Mythic+, modern raid difficulties, account-wide collections, rapid leveling, or current expansion storytelling. Current Classic Progression

“Classic progression” can refer to two separate live paths, so check the client name before creating a character.

Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary

The 20th Anniversary realms began in original Classic and later progressed into Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Edition. Blizzard's August 28, 2026 weekly update confirmed Black Temple was live in this version, which verifies that this progression branch is active in The Burning Crusade. Choose this path for Outland, level 70 progression, Burning Crusade raids, flying in Outland, and the Anniversary realm community. This is the logical home for someone who wanted a fresh vanilla start and planned to continue through the Dark Portal.

Mists of Pandaria Classic

Mists of Pandaria Classic is the later-expansion progression branch descended from the 2019 Classic journey. It recreates Pandaria's zones, class era, dungeons, scenarios, and raids within the Classic family.

Choose it if MoP is the expansion you want to replay or experience for the first time. Do not expect vanilla pacing or geography. Pandaria belongs to a later stage of WoW design with a different leveling rhythm, class toolkit, and endgame structure. WoW Hardcore

Hardcore uses Classic-style gameplay with one defining rule: your character has one life. Death ends that character's Hardcore adventure on that realm. A routine cave pull becomes a tactical operation, and an unattended campfire break becomes the Sith art of trusting absolutely nobody.

Choose Hardcore if the leveling journey is the goal. It works well for players who enjoy planning, professions, cautious routing, and stories created by close escapes. It is a poor choice for a first and only character if losing dozens of hours would ruin the game for you.

Hardcore can be played solo, but other players still shape the experience. Groups reduce some dangers while adding new ones, including risky pulls, respawns, and overconfidence. Start with a regular version if you first need to learn enemy abilities, cave layouts, and Classic's slower combat.

Other Currently Available Classic Experiences

Season of Discovery

Season of Discovery takes vanilla Classic foundations and changes them with runes, new class roles, altered encounters, level-band phases, and redesigned content. A mage can heal, a rogue can tank, and the Emperor must once again pretend this was all part of the plan.

Reported: The mode remains selectable and playable as of this update. However, Blizzard has not announced a new long-term roadmap, so this article does not promise future phases or continued major development. What is not a separate permanent version?

Timewalking, Chromie Time, and old-expansion questing inside modern WoW do not become Classic merely because you visit an older continent. They use modern characters, systems, balance, and collections.

Remix events also belong to modern WoW. Blizzard has officially announced Wrath of the Lich King Remix, but its official panel recap does not provide a launch date or enough detail to treat it as a playable version in this September 2026 guide.
